American beauty

If you were to head north 60 miles or so out of Atlanta, you'd come upon Sugar Hill, Georgia, a leafy bedroom community that's home to 11,000 people, and one very innovative, cutting-edge manufacturing company: MTI Whirlpools. MTI designs and manufactures an expansive line of made-in-America bathroom products, including sinks, shower bases, frameless glass enclosures, and bath furniture. However, the company is best known for its stylish tubs, such as the beautiful Elena bathtub shown above.

Peek-a-boo shower curtain

Here's another one of those "why-didn't-I-think-of-that" ideas. The Clear View Shower Curtain is specifically designed for bathrooms that are small, cramped, or have limited lighting. The attractive curtain features a clear plastic upper panel that emits light into the shower stall or bathtub, creating a brighter, safer showering environment. The 24-inch-tall panel is made from durable reinforced double-vinyl sheeting, and is fitted with rustproof aluminum grommets. The 48-inch-tall lower section of the curtain is made from opaque vinyl for privacy. The curtain is machine washable and impregnated with an industrial antimicrobial and germicidal inhibitor, which eliminates germs and stops the growth of fungi, mildew and mold for the life of the product. The Clear View Shower Curtain is available on-line for about $23.

Bright idea–sort of

Here's proof, once again, that some people have way too much time on their hands: Someone has just invented glow-in-the-dark toilet paper. Now you may be thinking, Why it world would anyone need such a thing? Can't they simply flip on the bathroom light or just feel for the roll? Well, let me just say that you're overthinking this just a tad. It's glow-in-the-dark toilet paper! Not universal health care, although they both might meet the same fate. Anyway, I found the whole idea of glowing toilet paper absolutely hilarious. It's called the, Glow-in-the-Dark Loo Roll, and it's sold by an on-line retailer in England. (I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere.) Potty on, Wayne!

Good-bye soggy soap

While on a remodeling job recently, I struck up a conversation with the tile contractor, who was busily tiling the shower walls. Well, he was busily tiling until I showed up and started asking questions.

We talked about thinset mortar, tile sizes and patterns, and the advantages of using cement backerboard, as opposed to moisture-resistant drywall, as a substrate.

Then we discussed a seemingly mundane subject: where to mount the soap dish.

As it turns out, soap-dish placement is quite a hot-button topic for many homeowners.

Italian bathing beauty

The Italian-made Novellini Cristal bathtub is unlike any tub I've ever seen. Its clean, contemporary design is positively geometric, with lines and angles converging to create a beautiful, comfortable fixture. Oh, and by the way, it's made of clear glass!
